Ævestaden is a norwegian/swedish trio that plays newly composed and traditional music both with early and modern instruments. Lyres, fiddle, mouth harp, langeleiks, kantele, vocals and electronics harmonize together in an idiosyncratic soundscape. Thematically the songs are about the conscious and the subconscious - secular and sacred - about life and death.
The trio consists of Eir Vatn Strøm, Levina Storåkern and Kenneth Lien - three musicians who are all multi-instrumentalists. Their variations on instrumentation opens up a unique sound when timeless harmonies and layers of minimalistic motifs combine to create an open and atmospheric world. In the same way that they explore their instruments, they also challenge the listeners expectations in terms of arrangement and form of their songs.
